Art to Die For.

Every hardcore Sacramento murder mystery fan knows about our very own Dorothea Puente, the lady that killed a bunch of people and took their social security money. Her house is a staple in our city for paranormal addicts and tourists alike. Though the house might remain popular for those reasons, the husband and wife that reside here now should be famous in their own right. Plus, they are really cool. I am proud to call them my neighbors. (Did I mention they have a life sized Dorothea mannequin on their porch??? Because they totally do and it's AWESOME!)

Barbara Holmes is an amazing artist who creates the most beautifully intricate mosaic pieces of art. Along with her daughter Jodie, they have made some spectacular work including a full sized Superman and a carousel horse. They even have stuff for the garden like flamingoes and hopscotch tiles. These ladies do it all. They even taught me how to make a tile, too! Let me tell you, it's no easy task!

It's going to be a busy summer for Barbara as she puts together a variety of works for our city's annual Sacramento Studio Tour coming up in September of this year. Hundreds of local artists will have the opportunity to open up their studios as their very own art gallery for folks to stop by and view the completed pieces on display. I'm delighted to say that I will be participating as well and setting up a gallery of my own photographs, so stay tuned for more on the project I'm working on!

It was such a privilege to be welcomed into Barbara's workspace to document her process. She truly is such a talent. Please take a moment to follow her on Instagram for updates on new works coming out. Most mosaics featured in this blog are for sale and may be purchased on her Etsy page...she even has the cutest little blue mosaic cat. You better go swoop it up before I do!
